Taylor Swift announced via Twitter today that her new concert video will premier on Apple Music. Earlier this year, Swift famously withheld her music from Apple’s streaming platform due to a dispute over how Apple was calculating plays to determine royalties. Apple and Swift came to an agreement and she backed off. Apparently, that relationship has now blossomed.
Some news sources are publicizing the fact that Swift’s label was not involved in the latest deal with Apple. But there’s no reason for them to have been. Labels typically own the master recording rights to studio recordings. The only way a label would obtain the right to the recording of a concert is if they were going to release a live recording of the concert. So it’s totally natural that her label was not involved.
